A Tour de Force Narrative

This is the second of Hamlet’s readings I’ve listened to, and like a wonderful story I’d find myself forgetting where I really was as I was transported to Dickensian London and traveled with Oliver from the hell of Fagin’s lair to the sanctuary of Mr. Brownlow’s. Hamlet’s range of voices made each character come to life, and it was a joy to lose myself in this extraordinary novel.

It’s been awhile since I’ve read anything by Dickens. I made the mistake of reading a biography of him and was rather let down so I found it hard to separate the man from his work. This was an excellent book to get me back into it. I found the story itself very satisfying, and maybe not QUITE as heavy as some of his other works. The narration by Hamlet, as always, was perfection. I won’t listen to anyone else read Dickens. He keeps the story flowing, even with those run-on sentences Dickens seems rather fond of.
